Standing out and creating a unique identity for our business and services is something we all aim to be doing, whether we work, network, or simply blog.

Therefore i’m surprised not to see that many google searches returning personnalised result.

Let’s be honest, you are spoiled for choice when it comes down to look up some tutorials or issues on the web. But Google have made it a bit easier for us by allowing bloggers to display their faces against their blog posts previews.

It might not seem like much, but when I look for stuff on the web, any web design or technical problem I may have, I am more than often inclined to click on a post authored by a familiar face (John Resig, Chris Coyier, ..etc) than on an anonymous one.

You know these people, you trust their expertise, and you know you have more chance ending up on a post likely to inform you, solve your issue, or simply distract you.

I decided to turn on this feature for my blog. And this is how it’ achieved.

Google Authorship

Welcome to Google Authorship

  1. Add link rel=”author” href=”https://plus.google.com/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/posts” to the head of you site. Replace the x’s by your google plus id. You’ll find it in the url of your profile page.
  2. Link back your google plus profile page to your blog by adding the url of your site in the contributor section.
  3. Make sure your +1′s are public.

It should take you a few days before Google crawls your site, and starts adding your google plus icon to your google search results. You will get an email from google confirming the addition of Google Authorship markup to your pages.
